Abbreviated as rhino, is a group of five extant species of odd-toed ungulates in the family Rhinocerotidae. Two of these species are native to Africa and three to Southern Asia.

Members of the rhinoceros family are characterized by their large size (they are some of the largest remaining megafauna, with all of the species able to reach one tonne or more in weight); as well as by an herbivorous diet; a thick protective skin, 1.5–5 cm thick, formed from layers of collagen positioned in a lattice structure; relatively small brains for mammals this size (400–600 g); and a large horn.

Rhinoceros are killed by humans for their horns, which are bought and sold on the black market, and which are used by some cultures for ornamental or traditional medicinal purposes. East Asia, specifically Vietnam, is the largest market for rhino horns. Rhino horns cost as much as gold on the black market. People grind up the horns and then consume them believing the dust has therapeutic properties. The horns are made of keratin, the same type of protein that makes up hair and fingernails. Both African species and the Sumatran rhinoceros have two horns, while the Indian and Javan rhinoceros have a single horn.

The IUCN Red List identifies three of the species as critically endangered.

Suggester says'This is such a spectacular drawing. It shows a remarkable level of details. Everyone should also have a look to the video time lapse that shows how this has been done!' This was also suggested by :devPaul-Shanghai: Stating ' the realism in this drawing is incredible, as is the sentiment behind the picture' Rhinoceros by AmBr0 ( Suggested by Seb-Photos and Featured by ArtByCher )

Holy crap! When I first saw this, I thought that this was a photo. This is an incredible piece; it shows amazing depth and detail. The shading techniques used in this are absolutely phenomenal. The area behind the ear and the face gives it such a three-dimensional look, and the eye gives off the reflection of a living creature. The details around the horn also add to the three-dimensional look. This is an amazing use of traditional art. The pure black add to the shading and, again, the three-dimensional look. The blackness in the ear is a little confusing though, as it kind of blends in with the black shadow behind the ear. But that is the only thing, and it doesn't even need to be fixed anyway; the shading and details make up for any mistakes (although I see no real mistakes).

Wow... Juts wow. This is a amazing piece! I also thought it was a photo!
I love the way the shadow hits the Rhino it gives a brilliant effect. He is very noticeable against the dark background. The wrinkles and texture in his skin add real detail to this picture. Having seen Rhinos before, the texture of his skin is spot on. He also has a lovely expression. The skin looks really rough (which is perfect) and i also love his eye. Its got lots of expression behind it. Even the way he is looking adds expression. I always think the eyes add great emphasis to a drawing/painting, and this has worked perfectly. Well done =)

Cierto!

looking at the time lapse video it doesn't show any 'blending' being done on this drawing, merely layered shading using just soft pencils, or is the blending just not on the shown on the video?  But then when I look at the finished drawing and your listed 'tools' i'm guessing the blending tools have been used between layers and just omitted from the timelapse?  It looks to 'real' to have not had any blending done (not that Rhinos are very smooth!).  It really is I feel the best drawing on this site.  Is this Bristol plate or Bristol vellum paper?  Would love to know more. Truly stunning. Love your drawing of Idris too...seems to be more 'alive' than mine!

:iconambr0:
AmBr0 Featured By Owner Nov 30, 2014
Thanks! :thanks: The whole process is recorded. The blending is just a very small fraction in time and a quick soft touch, that's the reason why you can barely notice. Take a closer look at 0:57 - 0:59 seconds on the timelapse, the tones suddenly become smoother because I used cotton pads .
The paper for this one is Canson Bristol.
